I’m not going to lie, MAC is a fantastic all-round make-up brand that offers an extensive range of products and caters to a wide audience. Since switching to cruelty-free beauty and fashion back in 2015, I have enjoyed finding cruelty-free alternatives to popular cult makeup and beauty products. I consider not only the appearance of a product, but its texture, application and longevity.
Sometimes, a so-called cruelty-free dupe for a well known product can be better quality than the original. Such as this MAC Spice lip liner dupe NYX Coffee! It’s one of the best MAC lip liner dupes that I’ve been using for years. But not all makeup dupes are equal. While I’m really impressed with these MAC NYX lip dupes, I have spent years tracking down a suitable product match for Audrey Hepburn’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s lipstick, which I wrote about here, as it difficult to find the perfect shade match. I’ve also tried lip liners from other brands, which claim to resemble certain MAC lip liners and other makeup products but I’ve never found any to be as good as these NYX lip liners.
Is MAC Makeup Cruelty-Free?
MAC states that it does not test on animals itself and doesn’t own animal-testing facilities, but it does sell products in countries like mainland China where animal testing may be required by law. Because they distribute via physical stores in those regions, they may comply with governmental regulations that include post-market animal testing or “safety assessments,” which disqualifies them under most cruelty-free certification standards. As a result, organisations like PETA list MAC as not cruelty-free.
Is NYX Cruelty-Free?
NYX is certified cruelty-free (for example via PETA’s “Beauty Without Bunnies”) and confirms that it does not test any of its ingredients or finished products on animals, nor does it sell in markets where animal-testing is mandatory. However, being cruelty-free is not the same as being fully vegan: NYX offers many vegan-formulated products and has a dedicated “vegan formulas” line, but it is not 100% vegan across its entire range. You can however, rest assured that NYX does not test on animals and therefore is a great cruelty-free, affordable makeup brand!
How to Find the Best MAC Lip Liner Dupes from NYX
