Easy Breaded Garlic Mushrooms Air Fryer Recipe

Mushrooms are a great meat-free option and so versatile. I love trying new mushroom recipes, from soups to vegetarian alternatives to meat dishes. Plus, I think that garlic and mushrooms are a really tasty combination that work really well together. So recently when I was looking for a quick and easy way to use a pack of mushrooms I had, I decided to recreate the frozen breaded garlic mushrooms that I’d bought previously. To make them light and not greasy, I decided to cook them in the air fryer too, which has quickly become one of my favorite ways to cook healthy fried and crispy foods. It’s safe to say they went down well and I will definitely be adding these to our family meal plan.

Garlic Mushrooms Air Fryer Recipe

This breaded garlic mushrooms cooked in the air fryer is a quick and tasty treat you're sure to love! It's perfect as a snack or as a side dish, plus it's much more cost-effective than buying ready made options from a store.

Ingredients

  • 200-250 button mushrooms washed and patted dry
  • 2 slices brown bread to make breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • 1-2 cloves garlic optional, for flavour
  • 1-2 tsp oil olive or vegetable
  • Pinch of salt + pepper

How to Make Breaded Garlic Mushrooms in an Air Fryer

1. Make the breadcrumbs

Toast your brown bread lightly (helps it dry out). You can leave the bread as it is, without toasting it first but I find that it helps to dry out the bread a little so that the breadcrumbs stay loose and stick to the egg better.

Blend or grate it into crumbs. I use a food processor for this part which makes this part much faster and easier! I love this food processor and dough mixer!

Mix the crumbs with a little salt, pepper, and finely grated or crushed garlic.

Drizzle in a teaspoon of oil and mix — this helps them crisp up nicely in the air fryer.

2. Prepare coating

Crack the eggs into a bowl and whisk.

Put your garlic breadcrumbs in another bowl.

3. Coat mushrooms

Dip each mushroom into the egg, then roll in breadcrumbs until well coated.

For extra crunch, you can repeat (egg → crumbs → egg → crumbs).

4. Air fry

While you can spray or brush the breaded mushrooms with oil first if you prefer, I’d recommend simply making sure that you preheat your air fryer to 190°C (375°F) for about 3 minutes. This is the way that I cook them and they always turn out perfect without the mushrooms sticking to the air fryer plate. Of course, you can also use an air fryer paper liner too, which will catch any loose breadcrumbs instead of them falling to the bottom of the air fryer. Although as long as you’ve coated your mushrooms well in the egg, breadcrumb and garlic mixture and preheated your air fryer, you shouldn’t end up with more than a sprinkle of breadcrumbs at the bottom of the fryer after cooking.

Place in the air fryer basket in a single layer.

Cook at 190°C (375°F) for 8–10 minutes, shaking halfway.

They’re ready when golden brown and crispy. And that’s it, ready to serve and enjoy!

Serving Suggestions and How to Store

Serve hot or leave to cool and serve them as a delicious cold snack or side dish. I like to serve them with either a homemade garlic and yoghurt dip or with this tasty green herb garlic dip that I recently created.

If you do happen to make too many and don’t eat them all at once (if you can resist the temptation), these will store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Make sure that you reheat them thoroughly if you prefer them hot or serve cold. You can also freeze them in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
